The Norton Radstock Action Group is committed to preserving the wildlife along the railway line. Construction in other areas such as the Colliers Way have demonstrated that the path and wildlife can live side by side with minimal longterm effect. We will preserve as many trees as possible and if nescessary realign the path. We will survey the path for live badger setts (although no live setts were found at the survey last year) and obtain the appropriate licences and take appriopriate action as required by the wildlife act. The path and any lighting near the pitpath will constructed in such a way as to minimise effect on bats.
The Colliers Way is a very clean path with only a small litter problem, because the path is well used and Sustrans Rangers patrol it often. On a recent visit to the path between the Nightingale Way footpath and the Pit Path the only litter was from residents gardens! (see photograph below) There has been no significant problem with motor bikes. There is no reason that this shouldn't be the same for the new path.
The path would be carefully surveyed for trees together with the Tree Officer from Bath and North-East Somerset. No trees will be felled unless absolutely required. Where possible new trees would be planted. Below are some picures that a large proportion of the path is clear.
